If you drive a car with factory-fitted or aftermarket tinted windows in Nigeria, it’s important to know that you’re legally required to obtain a tinted glass permit from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Thankfully, the process is now fully digital, making it more convenient, secure, and transparent for vehicle owners nationwide.

In line with its drive to enhance service delivery and eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy, the NPF has reintroduced and digitized the process of acquiring a Tinted Glass Permit in Nigeria, under the Police Specialized Services Automation Project (POSSAP).

This move follows widespread public concern and complaints over unlawful stops and harassment by law enforcement agents, especially for vehicles with factory-installed tints. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, approved the automation to address these issues and streamline access to critical police services.

What the Law Says About Tinted Glass in Nigeria

According to the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Decree No. 6 of 1991, driving a vehicle with tinted windows without official authorization is a punishable offense in Nigeria. Even if your car came with pre-installed tints, you’re still legally obligated to apply for and carry a valid tinted permit.

In special case such as medical conditions or official use exceptions may apply. However, the general rule remains: no permit, no tinted glass.

How to Apply for a Tinted Glass Permit Online in Nigeria (via POSSAP)

Follow these steps to apply for your tinted glass permit using the NPF’s official POSSAP platform:

Tinted Glass Permit

1. Visit the Official POSSAP Portal

Go to the POSSAP website using a secure browser to begin your application.

2. Register with Valid Identification

Sign up using your NIN, BVN, or TIN to confirm your identity and access the portal. These details ensure your records are traceable and accurate.

3. Create a User Profile

Fill out your personal information carefully. Include your full name, residential address, contact number, and a secure password.

4. Email Verification

You’ll receive a verification code in your email inbox. Enter it on the portal to complete your registration process.

5. Log In to Start the Application

After email verification, log in using your credentials and navigate to the list of police services.

6. Select ‘Tinted Glass Permit’

Click on the “Tinted Glass Permit” option to begin the vehicle-specific application process.

7. Enter Vehicle Details

Provide accurate details about your vehicle; make, model, registration number, and year. You’ll also need to upload essential documents like your vehicle license and proof of ownership.

8. Review and Pay

Double-check all submitted information. Then proceed to make payment securely through the portal.

9. Schedule Inspection & Biometric Capture

Once payment is successful, you’ll be prompted to choose a date and location for vehicle inspection and biometric data capture at your nearest Police Intelligence Department office.

Why This Process Matters

This digitized system is a core part of the Nigeria Police Force’s modernization efforts. It not only reduces room for corruption and harassment but also ensures that citizens access services transparently. In their statement, the NPF urged Nigerians to avoid backdoor channels and always use the official method.

Getting your tinted glass permit in Nigeria is now simpler than ever. With the fully online process via POSSAP, you can register, submit documents, pay, and schedule inspections, all from the comfort of your home.
