Three Nigerian women, Hadiza Abba, Fatima Malah, and Fatima Gamboi, have been released by Saudi Arabian authorities after spending 10 months in detention for alleged cocaine possession.

The three Nigerian women were arrested on March 5, 2024, at Prince Mohammad bin Abdul Azeez International Airport in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, while on pilgrimage.

The arrest of the three Nigerian women was linked to the earlier detention of two Nigerian nationals found with 150 capsules of cocaine weighing over 1.6 kg.

The women were suspected of being accomplices and detained by Saudi authorities.

The Nigerian government engaged in high-level diplomatic talks with Saudi authorities, which ultimately led to the women’s release.

Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesman for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the women’s release followed prolonged diplomatic and legal efforts.

Key Events Leading to Their Release;

– Arrest and Detention: The women were arrested on March 5, 2024, and detained for 10 months.
– Diplomatic Efforts: The Nigerian government engaged in high-level diplomatic talks with Saudi authorities.
– Release and Acquittal: The women were released after being acquitted of the charges against them.

The women were received by Amb. Muazam Nayaya, Consul-General of Nigeria in Jeddah, and are currently awaiting immigration processes to return to Nigeria and reunite with their families.
